120 Years Of Electronic Music



This site charts the development of electronic musical instruments from 1870 to 1990. For the purposes of this project electronic musical instruments are defined as instruments that synthesise sounds from an electronic source. This definition leaves out a whole section of hybrid electronic instruments developed at the end of the last century that used electronics to manipulate or amplify sounds and tape recorders/ Musique Concrete, it has been decided to leave in some non electronic instruments such as the Futurists "Intonarumori" due to their importance in the history of modern music.

Audio Pad



Audiopad is a composition and performance instrument for electronic music which tracks the positions of objects on a tabletop surface and converts their motion into music. One can pull sounds from a giant set of samples, juxtapose archived recordings against warm synthetic melodies, cut between drum loops to create new beats, and apply digital processing all at the same time on the same table. Audiopad not only allows for spontaneous reinterpretation of musical compositions, but also creates a visual and tactile dialogue between itself, the performer, and the audience.

Akai Professional entered the electronic musical instrument world in 1984 with one purpose - to give artists the tools they need to express and explore new musical ideas.
However, it was Akai's sampling technology that was instrumental in securing the company's future and the S900 sampler was a massive success the world over when it was released providing exactly the facilities people wanted at a price they could afford. To say that the S900 changed the way musicians work today would be an understatement and the name Akai became as closely associated with sampling as the brand name Hoover is to vacuum cleaning!

Evolution



Evolution Electronics is a UK based manufacturer of affordable software and hardware products for the computer musician. Founded in 1985 by Richard Watts, the company released the EVS-1 synthesizer in 1986, a synth that quickly achieved cult status. After years of successful design work for a string of well know companies, Evolution released the MK-149 keyboard, its first own brand computer music product.
