There are thousands of retail and distribution options available for artists and independent labels. Every one of them fits under one of the three following categories:

1) The DIY Model: You distribute your music to friends, family, and whatever fans you gain through live shows. You rely heavily on 'word of mouth' to attract new fans to your music. Distribution is basically non-existent, other than what you personally deliver to a customer.
2) The Major Distribution Deal: You pray (and hope beyond hope) for that one-in-a-million major distribution deal that will get your CDs in Wal-Mart and other retail outlets.
